Starting point:

  • Broadband speed was around the 5Mbps download and 0.5Mbps upload
  • Wifi network was reaching maximum speeds of around 40-50Mbps, the ethernet network was 100Mbps.

Our client had the following setup:

  • ADSL Broadband an eclectic spread of wifi access points throughout the premises making roaming in the building impossible and wifi network speeds rarely in excess of 50Mbps (ex. video conferencing or VOIP calls would be cut off by moving from one room to the next)
  • Multiple 5 port ethernet switches with cables going over the floors to a variety of locations.

We implemented the following solution:

A Ubiquiti UniFi fully managed network comprising of:

  • Draytek 2862Lac router with dual LTE (4G) and ADSL connections.
  • Ubiquiti UniFi USG router for load balancing the 2 internet connection and a UniFi Cloud Key for network management.
  • Ubiquiti UniFi 16 port POE switch to power all access points and connect the rest of the network peripherals (printers etc).
  • Multiple Ubiquiti UniFi wifi access points throughout the premises and an additional external mesh access point for outdoor access.
  • New cables running under the floors where possible and neatly tied where not (as per client’s request).
  • EE unlimited data sim (£27/month).
  • A Poynting 5G 11dB High Gain Cross Polarised LTE MIMO Antenna mounted on the chimney and pointed at the nearest EE mast.

Result:

  • Broadband speed is now in the region of 30Mbps download and 5Mbps upload.
  • Wifi network speed is now around 280-300Mbps throughout the premises (150Mbps on 2.4Ghz + 150Mbps on 5Ghz channel) and the ethernet network is 1Gbps throughout.
  • 1 happy customer.
